Several convictions with finoti tip to £10 were recorded. The Magistrate i-aid that the defendants could consider themselves fortunate that they had not been charged with manslaughter, seeing that there had been a woman and children on the premises. NELSON, January 26. At a largely-attended meeting of the Stoke Fruitgrowers' Association last evening it was unanimously resolved to protest against the proposal of the Railway Department to discontinue to rail fruit on the express trains from Lyttelton to Dunedin and Inve.rwirgill. The proposal, if put into effect, would be particularly disastrous to stone fruits and tomatoes. It was further Tesolved that Mr T. W. Kirk, Director of Orchards, be requested to interview the Railway Department and press the urgency of soft fruit being railed on express trains as hitherto. CHRISTCHUROH, January 26. At the Police Court to-day Francis Redman was fined 20s on each of two charges of selling adulterated milk, and was ordered to pay £8 8s (analyst's fees). The executive of the New Zealand Royal Life-saving Society met last evening. It was reported that the assets were £168 in excess of the liabilities. The following allocations were made from the Govern - ent grant: —Canterbury, £25; Wellington, £25; and Wanganiii, £15. The Central Executive (London) forwarded a life member's badge for the Hon. H. F. Wigram (president of the Canterbury head centre).
