MINING.

The secretary of the Success Company reports a return of 31oz 12dwt for 118 hours' work. The master of the Olrig* dredge reports that the ground improved slightly last week. There were a few large stones in the cut and a good many " maories" on the bottom. Tho motion shaft broke on Friday morning; the local foundry had one of the size required, but it would be a few dnys before it could bo fixed. Tho ore broken in the stones on No. 2 reef, Occidental Consolidated mine, Thames, continued to prove very promising last week. The south stope over No. 5 level showed dabs of gold freely, and a few pieces of stone carrying strong gold were picked out. Sfome nice prold wag also seen in the ore below No. 5 level, and about 61b of picked stono were obtained from this place. Nioo dabs of gold were showing in the stopo on tho Occidental reef. The d red''('master of tho Golden J3ed dredge, in his weekly report, states that he has moved tho pegs and headlines so as to onablo him to dredge the small freehold lately acquired which adjoins the claim, and into which the auriferous wash is loading, but as a largo quantity of ton stuff would have to be removed, ho expected the return of gold for this week would not be quite 60 gofld.

Tho manager of tho Roxburgh Amalgamated Mining and Sluicing Company (Limited) advises & return of 570z 17dwt, and reports an improvement in tho wish as ho approaches Loudon's area, where he previously obtained good results. CROMWELL NOTES. (Fbom Ouk Own Correspondent.) CROMWELL, January 22. Tho rivers are rising to-day aa tho result of tho recent heavy rain. Riso and Shine No. 1 oommcnced dredging again early in tho -week. No. 2 haa not yet 'been stopped for repairs, but this will probably be dono on Monday. Arrangements for repairing were jnado so that there would bo a weekly yield from at hvist ono dredge. Early in February both dredges will bo steady at work. Electrio No. 1 is almost finished repairing, and should havo a further successful run if tho river remains favourable. Great activity still continues on tho Novis field, with a splendid supply of water for adl purposes. No definite information is yet available as to tho result of operations by tho Roaring Meg Company. MONT D'OR COMPANY. (Fnou Ouh Own Co&responuxmt.) GREYMOUTH, January 22. The annual meeting of the Mont D'Or Gold Mining and Water Race Company (Limited) was held at Ross on Wednesday. Tho annual report stated that the receipts for the year from gold totalled 9160z 7dwt Zhgr, of tho value of £3629 16s Bd. This has enabled your directors to declare threo dividends of Is per share. It is pleasing to note that this has been achieved with tho lowest expenditure yet recorded by tho oamjpaHy, thus reflecting credit on our choice of the mine manager appointed some IS months ago. Tho new face has been fully opened out, and has quite confirmed otrr prospecting operations. The washdirt is much finer than any previously worked by tho company. Wo havo taken advantage of this fact to fill up the swamp on our 94 acres of freehold on Moorehouso road, which is answering the dual purpose of providing room for our tailings and at the samo time improving the land for grazing purposes. As intimated in the mine manager's report, wo havo thrown off an area of worked ground and acquired another special claim of 38 acres to the north-west of our old claim. The company's water races, dams, pipe-lines, and plant are in good working order, having received a good overhauling in the early part of tho year, which was very dry, whilst tho latter half of tho year has been very wet, putting a severe test on the carrying capacity of our water races and dams, to which they havo been equal. The prospects of tho company are reported to be exceedingly bright, and. given a, copious rainfall, it is anticipated that six dividends will be declared during the current year, three dividends of Is per share (absorbing £1800) having been declared by tho company for the year ended November 30 last.
