(Pkb United Press Association.) GISBORNE, January 21. Herbert MaclcaJi, traveller for Messrs J. Griffin and Co., of Nelson, was drowned while surf bathing on the Waikanae Beach tlus aftcrnoou. r l he beach fete was in progress. and hundreds of people were about at the time. Efforts at rescue were unavailing, as Maclean was not seen after he first sank. The body has not yet been recovered. Another commercial traveller named Gilchrist, who was bathing with Maclean, had a very narrow escape, being rescued at the last gasp. A nasty surf was running, as the result of a marine disturbance, and several other parties were in trouble, notably the life-saving- team while gyving a demonstration with the-r reel. The sufferer is still unconscious, and details are unavailable, but it is believed that be v.-as knocked down by i motor car.

Information waa received by the police last evening of the sudden death of Mrs Sarah Nelson. fO years of age, at Brighton, about noon yesterday. Tho deceased, a resident of Dunedin, was staying at Brighton with her husband, who was present when she expired. Mrs Nelson had been troubled with a weak heart, and was attended by Dr Riley for some time. The doctor has issued a certificate of death, and an inquest ;s not deemed necessary.
