HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORTS
; PROGRESS IN FRANCE AND BELGIUM. The High Commissioner reports trader date London, January 7 (7.30 p.m.): — faris reports that in the region of Lille a violent German attack was repulsed. In the Woevre important progress was made, the Allies being now in possession of a position in line with the enemy. In the direction of Altkirch progress was made, the French occupying the woods west of the town. EAST AND WEST THEATRES. The High Commissioner reports under date London, January 8 (1.35 a.m.): — Petrograd reports that there was no fighting on the left bank of the Vistula except skirmishes along the line from Snkha to Bolinsoy. Near Sukha the Germans were driven by a bayonet attack out of part of the Russian trenches occupied on the previous night. The Russians captured a number of prisoners and five guns. The advance at Bukovina continues. Paris states that the enemy's violent attacks in the region of Lassigny, in the Argonne region, at Verdun, and on the ridge dominating Steinbach were all rejjuliad.
