NEW SOUTH WALES NATIONAL RESERVE. PRESS CENSORSHIP CONDEMNED. SYDNEY, January 8. .Mr Carmichael, Minister of Public Instruction, referring to the proposed formation of a national reserve, said: "We have to thank the extraordinarily stringent censorship for the inability of the public to realise the grimness of the struggle, the true position of the combatants, and the possibilities of the future. Tills is a war of attrition. The, time lias come for us to recognise honestly that the war is going to tax the utmost resources of the Allies, especially the untrained millions of the British Empire." Mr Carmichael proposes that every man up to the age of 50 should be compelled to undergo serious military training on at least one afternoon weekly. r TRADING WITH THE ENEMY. A NEW ZEALAND TRIAL. WELLINGTON, Jaemiary 8. Henrich Wilhelm Dverkop is being tried in the Magistrate's Court this afternoon oil five charges of having attempted to trade with the enemy. CAVALRY REMOUNTS WANTED. INHUMAN UNIONISM. HARD CASES OF ALIENS IN WESTRALIA. FREMANTLE, January 8. (Received Jan. 8, at 8.-30 p,m.) As the result of the Lumpers' Union's refusal to work with naturalised Germans, a number of men and their families are in a pitiable plight. One has been 46 years in Australia, and helped to form the original Melbourne Wharf Labourers' Union. Another has two sons in the cadet forces, and a third is with the troops in Egypt. Most of the men are unable to get work, and the Government refuses to intern them in the prisoners' camp because they are naturalised. FOOTBALLERS AS RECRUITS. " AUSTRALIAN RUGBY TOUR ABANDONED. SYDNEY, January 9. (Received Jan. at 1.25 a.m.) Owing to the number of players who have enlisted, the Northern Rugby Union has notified the New South Wales League that it is impossible for an Australian team to tour England during the coming season as was intended.
