The general election returns show that the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives has been reduced from 147 to 20. New York State has gone overwhelmingly Republican, and Mr Whitman beat Mr Glyn for the Governorship easily. The Congressional representation of New Jersey has changed from nine Democrats and three Republicans to eight Republicans and four Democrats, the majority being entirely "wiped out. The Democrats are likely to retain their majority in the Senatorial elections. Mr Roosevelt's third party has suffered a debacle, the Progressive vote having apparently returned to the Republicans. THE PROHIBITION CAMPAIGN. VICTORIES IN POTIR STATES. WASHINGTON, November 5. By a large majority the Prohibitionists carried the States of Washington, Colorado, Arizona, and Oregon, but Ohio and California decided to retain the licensed drink traffic by Large majorities. The Prohibitionists profess to be greatly pleased with their victories, and hope to make the national campaign for prohibition a success. California has decided by a small majority to prohibit prize-fighting. WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE. (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) WASHINGTON, November 5. • The seven States of North and South Dakota, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Missouri, and Nebraska voted on the women's suffrage question, but only two States—Montana au4 Nevada—voted favourably. HOW THE HOUSE IS CONSTITUTED. WASHINGTON, November 5. The elections show that 229 Democrats — 197 Republicans, 7 Progressives, 1 Socialist, and 1 Independent —have been elected to the House of Representatives.
