THE PIG INDUSTRY.
OPINION OF AN EXPERT. ' (Fbom Ode Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, September 18. Authorities always maintain that there is not a more profitable industry than that of pig-breeding when run on proper lines, and being aware of the fact that Mr I. W. Lonsdale, manager of Moumahaki State Farm, was an expert in pig-breeding, and probably one of the best authorities in New Zealand, your representative got in touch with him to-day to learn his views of the matter. As a coincidence, Mr Lonsdale,, n reply, said that he had just received a letter of congratulation from an important breeder in Victoria upon the splendid type of pig bred at Moumahaki, the State Farm having recently exported a Berkshire breeding sow to- a farm about 58 miles from Melbourne. In the course of a chat that: followed, our representative gathered that* Mr Lonsdale established a herd a little over 12 months ago, and the sow sent to Australia formed portion of one of the first litters. Attention is directed at the State Farm to the breeding of one type at presentnamely, the Berkshire, which is looked upon as a quick fattener and makes splendid bacon, and reports concerning the herd have been so favourable that the management of Moumahaki cannot supply the demand for stud purposes, apart altogether from baconers. ' "Yes," said Mr Lonsdale, "I speak with authority when I say that, if fanners only realised the tremendous profits to be made m the pig industry, if run on proper lines, they would make every effort to foster it." Mr Lonsdale mentipned one institution in Australia that went in for specialising :'n several different types of animal, and is making over £2000 a year revenue out of the sales effected, some of the pigs raised being sent to South America.
