OTAGO DISTRICT COMMITTEE. ,1 Tho half-yearly meeting of the Manchester ,v Unity, Independent Order of Oddfellows, \ Otago District, was concluded at Oamaru e yesterday. P.G. Bro. A. W. Palmer preI- sided. i- Bro. Black moved —" That this meeting e deeply deplores the Huntly mining disaster, r and records its sympathy with those left i. behind by the deceased."—The motion wae o carried in silence, those present standing. 0 Bro. Coughlan moved—"That the dietrict be instructed to purchase regalia to r the extent of £25 for the purpose of lendn ing it to lodges for social and other funcr tions."—The motion was lost, delegates do- ; claring that tho present time was not opport tune for tho expenditure ol money on ree galia. f The Chairman moved—"That, in accordr ance with tho opinion of P.P.G.M. Bro. i, Calvert as forwarded to lodges regarding tho - duties and responsibilities of lodge trustees, 3 this district resolves that each lodge shall i. appoint a solicitor who, if ho does not pre- , pare the securities, should peruse them, s and the,settlement should be through him." s —Bro. Coughlan moved as an amendment , to the same effect as the motion, but pro--1 viding that eaoh lodge should be recom- - mended to appoint a solicitor.—The amendt ment and the motion, on being put, were both lost. c Formal regulations regarding the lendr ing of lodge or district funds on mortgage , securities were passed. Bro. Watson (Prince of Wales Lodge) 3 moved that district rule 29 should be so , amended as to d,o away with the half-yearly ) meetings of the District Committee. The business done at these meetings, he said, - did not warrant the expense entailed by r them.—Several members opposed the s motion, which, on being put, was lost. i Bro. Sullivan (Albion Lodge) moved— r " That, to ensure a regular publication of 5 the Manchester Unity oolumn in the Otago Daily Times and tho Evening Star, the dis- : trict appoint a competent pei'son as editor at a honorarium not exceeding £20 per r annum."—The motion was lost, the pref sent editor of the columns stating that he ; was willing to continue the work.—Bro. Taylor, was appointed to edit one of tho i columns, and a motion of thanks to the ■ present editor was carried by acclamation. Tho following levies were fixed for the i half year:—District benefit, 3s; manage- • ment fund. 2s 3d. It was decided that a sum not exceeding ■ £5 5s should be donated to the Oamaru Hospital. A motion of thanks to the Oamaru brethren for their hospitality to the delei gates' was oarried by acclamation. A motion of thanks to the Otago Provincial Secretary was also carried, and proceedings closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
