AUCKLAND NOTES.

(From Ode Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, May 11. The Frankton Borough Council, whicl met on Friday night,' received a lettei from the secretary of the Nelson branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Onion apologising for the delay in reply ing to the council's'letter complaining oi statements with regard to the " white slave'' traffic in Frankton made by Mrs Field. The letter states that the information had been given to Mrs Field by a lady who had been travelling through Frankton and was now in Australia. Mrs Field had written to her, but so far had had no reply. SMART CARGO WORK. At various periods some exceptionally smait work has been carried out at Auckland in' discharging cargo from coastal, intercolonial, and oversea vessels, those of the Ty&er Line (now known as the Commonwealth and Dominion Line) and the Shaw, Sayill, and Albion Line figuring very prominently in the list. Some years ago the Commonwealth and Dominion liner Muritai, on the occasion of her visit to these seas, made a dominion record in discharging general cargo at -Auckland from London, 4280 tons being landed .n 57 working hours. The record was all the more creditable as only the two hatches were worked continuously, operations at the other three hatches ceasing at 11 o'clock each night. In addition, the Muritai took on board 1100 bales of wool and 500 packages of gum. The Muritai arrived in port again from London last Thursday morning, and accomplished another creditable discharge performance. She was berthed at Queen's wharf, and to unload at noon on that day. Most of the hatches were /worked continuously, and in less than 44 working hours over 3000 tons were lifted from her holds, though operations were consider- ! ably delayed by heavy rain on Thursday afternoon. The work was completed shortly before 11 a.m. on Saturday.
