A day or two ago (says tfce Christchxirch, Press) a man, who was the owner of a motor cycle, was approached by a. stranger, who announced himself as a prospective purchaser of the machine. After a careful examination of the motor cycle, the stranger— indicated that he was prepared to buy, but would like a trial spin first. The owner readily agreed, and the stranger mounted and rede off. It proved to be a long trial run, for the owner has seen neither hia machine nor the stranger since.

Ballots are being taken amongst the members of the shearers' 1 unions throughout the dominion on three questions: A 6 to joining the United! Federation of Labour and the Social Democratic Party, as to amalgamation with the Australian Workers' Union, and as to whether members are willing to accept £1 per 100 for shearing for a further term of three years. The result of the ~votes will bo announced at the end of this month.

An unusual sight was witnessed at His Majesty's Theatre, Auckland, on Monday night, just before the performance commenced. The sultry weather was the cause of the roof being opened, when suddenly rain began to fall, the patrons of the orchestra stalls being immediately underneath. Umbrellas were quickly opened and coats requisitioned, while there was a general stampede, amidst laughter and applause from those safely under cover. Tho roof was quickly closed again before any serious inconvenience was caused.

Tho past week of uninterrupted fine weathers has enabled the farmers in the Akaroa district to make good progress -with tho cocksfoot harvest, and another week of similar weather will see a great many finished.
