OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD

The monthly meeting of tho Education Board was continued yesterday morning; present—Messrs J. Mitchell (chairman), Messrs Borrie, M'Kerrow, Scott, Israel, Fleming, and M'Klnlay. RESIGNATIONS AND APPOINTMENTS. The following resignations were accepted: Rose Darling, mistress, Tapanui D.11.; C. T. O'ConnelL, mistress, Bannockburn; Elizabeth Barber, mistress, Duntroon; Jessie Henderson, mistress, Leith Valley; Jessie M. Mitchell, junior assistant, George Street; Jane Olanvillo, junior assistant, Cromwel ; Beatrice Craig, junior assistant.', Owaka; Walter Restall, pupil teacher, Mormngton. Appointments wero made as follow:—J. P. Botting, head master, Sutton (new ippointmont); W. O. Closs, fourth assistant, George Street, vice K A. Searle (promoted) ; W. M. L. Bonnin, seventh assistant, Oamaru North (new appointment); E J. Jones, eighth assistant, Oamaru North (new appointment); Oke Barton, third assistant, Oamaru North, vice R. W. S. Botting (promoted). PUPIL TEACHERS AND PROBATIONERS. The following appointments were ratified: —Probationers: Stirling — Kinnison M'NeiUy, vice 0. Dallas (withdrawn); Green Island—Roy Abernethy, vice Driver (withdrawn); High Street—Fred J. Gair, vice Holgato (transferred to.Mornington). Pupil teachers: Tapanui—Rita Crawford, vice Quayle (withdrawn); Mornington—Maxwell Holgate, vice Restall (resigned). GENEBAL. Accounts amounting to £14,617 10s 4d -were passed for payment. Mr A. G. Melville was appointed to audit the accounts of school committees for the year ending February 1 28. A petition was received from tho residents of Conical Hills for establishment of a school in their district. In connection with the application, the chief inspector recommended that application bo made to tho department for the cost of tho site and erection of the school.—lt was decided to agree to the course recommended by tho chief inspector. . The Committee of the Maori Hill School wrote applying for the construction of an additional class room and a retiring room.— It was decided to forward the report of the inspectors on the application. The report stated that the inspectors did not think the committee had presented a sufficiently strong case at present to warrant the department giving the necessary grant. The Director of the School of Art (Mr Haworidge) reported that the Dresden Piano Company had offered to donate a suitable challenge shield, to be held during the year by the school showing the beat collective results in design at the proficiency examinations. —It was decided to accept the offer with thanks. The Chief Inspector requested permission .to arrange courses of teaching in ambulance and first aid for teachers, pupil teachers, probationers, and training college students preparing for certificate examinations. —Necessary authority granted. The architect s recommendation that the application of the Otepopo_ school for certain repairs to the building, etc., at a cost of. £24 10s, -was adopted. Recommendations by the architect in regard to certain work at the Waihola school (SI) and the Crydevale school (£4) were also adopted. The board decided to pay half cost of the installation of window shutters in one of tho rooms at tho Musselburgh school. The shutters had been constructed to enable tho room to bo darkened, so as to allow of teaching by lantern slides being carried out. The board voiced the opinion, howevefir, that the Musselburgh committee should have obtained the sanction of the board before going on with the work, though it agreed that the committee had acted in good faith. TENDEBS. The following tenders were accepted :— Ereotion of a new school at Cromwell. Mr J. Minn (£1600); erection of a teacher's residence at .Ettrielc, Mr D. Boyd (£338).
