FIRES.
(Per United Press Association.) \CHIIISTCHURCH, February 19. T'ne Horonfta State School, with its contents, wa\s totally destroyed by fire at about 10 o'clock on Tuesday evening. The schoolhouse was saved. The damage is extensive, and as it is the practice of the Education Department not to insure &chool buildings, the loss to tho North' Canterbury Education Board will be considerable. The cause of the outbreak is not knovn. An inquiry will be held at Hororata on Monday.
By a Grc which broke out at noon on Wednesday a carrier's wafron, owned by Mr Wilson, was burned at Hawea. Flat, and an adjacent etack of !barley in bags, the property of Mr Cotter, was partially destroyed. Fanned by a high wind, the fire sprcau" rapidly, and a coat containing a considerable sum of money was burned with tRe wagon. The horses had fortunately been unyoked before the outbreak occurred, and by tho willing resistance of neighbours the Tiro was confined to the paddock in which it hot! originated.
