A Uro ocourred m the machinery and fitter's shop of tho railway maintenance works at Kaiwarra this morning. 'Ihe bunding was a wooden one, and very old, and it was quickly destroyed. The mam loss, however, was m the destruction of the machinery, which was comparatively new. The total loss is estimated to be about £3000. Tho cause of the lire is unknown. It evidently started near the boiler house.
The teacher's residence at the Oaonui School was completely burned to tho ground at an early hour on Monday morning (says the Taranaki Herald). 'Ihe build.ng, which was a wooden one of five rooms, was the property of the Taranaki Education Board. The house was valued at £450, and was not insured. It was oocunicd by Mr C. I. Evetts, the schoolmaster, who had no insurance on his furniture, which he valued 'at £100. The origin of the fire is a complete mystery,, as Mr and Mrs Evetts left the house on December 12, and had not been there since.
On Tuesday, at 4 p.m (says the Southland News), a fire broke out in a fibre shod, near the flaxmill of Messrs Jarvis a.nd Fosbonder, New River, and the building and contents were completely destroyed.
