CHARGES OF FORGERY.
MAORI COMMUTED FOR TRIAL.

AUCKLAND, January 30,
Mr Cuitcu, S.M., heard charges of lorgery this morning against a young Maori, -Toinhui Toroua, aged 23, who was alleged to have obtained from tho Native Lund Board corliijn sums of money totalling £85 that rightly belonged to his younger brother, Teruwhete, still a minor.
Terawhete Toroua, brother of the accused, said ho had never received any money Iroiu the Native Lands Department, and the signature on tho documents produced were not his.
Detective Sergeant Ward stated that the nccused had expressed sorrow lor what he ■hail done, and had said ho would pay the money back if tho L<uid Board would asust him to soil some land that he had. lie knew, he said, that ho had done wrong as soon as he got tho money. The accused reserved his defence, and was committed to the Supremo Court for trial.
