FIRE AT PORTSMOUTH

A huge semaphore tower and a su'rl'ounding block of stores at Portsmouth dockyard were destroyed by fire. The damage is estimated at several hundred thousands of pounds. Quantities of oil and naval stores were destroyed. The battleship Queen Mary wa3 threatened, and had to be towed to safety. The rigging honse, tlio sail loft, and the staff captains' offices were burnt. A largo force of naval mcn v prevented the spread of the oil from tho tanks. Many interesting documents, dating back to Nelson's time and beyond, were destroyed. Two of the signalmen in the semaphore tower perished in the flames.
