LONDON, July 25. . Mr Wilson alleges that bogus union* financed by the Shipping Federation purpose attacking and endeavouring to discredit him. He admitted that he had brought five libel actions, and in each had obtained one farthing damages. The Times says it is rather more than 12 years since the King, as Duke of York, opened the first Commonwealth Parliament. During all that time the new dominion has prospered more and more abundantly, and in the process has impressed itself with new and welcome force upon the common life of the British* world. Colonel Jarvis, chairman of the Remount Committee, states that the horses available for the military in the country and Loudon have decreased 50 per cent, m three years. At the present rate of decrease it will shortly be impossible to provide mounted service other than yeomanry. At a meeting in Caxton Hall of the committee favouring the repeal of the "Cat and Mouse" Act. a letter from Mr Asquith was Tead stating that if the findings of the conference were submitted.in writing he would give caTefnl consideration to t;hem, but it did not appear to him that any good would be served by receiving a deputation in reference to an Act so recently passed after full debate. The Central Market Committee has recommended that a tenancy be granted to Armours, American meat men. Thechairman stated that the company had agreed that 35 per cent, of the meat sold by them should be English-killed. The tenant of the top floor in a house at Hackney complained of an offensive smell, and an inspection disclosed the body oj a nine months old child under a loose board in one of the lower rooms. The bodies of two children (twins) aged two years and a-balf were found behind a cellar wall. A young man named Frederick Roberteon, -who las a wooden leg, occupied the rooms with, his wife and children. Sis weeks ago the wife was removed to an infirmary owing to a breakdown, and Robertson departed after telling his neighbours that the children had been placed in the care of friends. IHe stated that he was worried owing to his wife's illness. Robertson has been arrested. .PEKING, July 25. The rebels at Shanghai made a'series of attacks on the arsenal, but' Admiral Tseng dispersed tiiem by means „of a severe shell fire. The Consuls protested to the Admiral against the erratic firing. Many shells fell in the European settlement. BERLIN, July 25.
A countess, who is the wife of a German officer, has been arrested. She had handsome apartments, and conducted a money-lending and matrimonial agency, by which she victimised army officers.
