THE DEADLY PEA RIFLE.
REMITS AT ACCLIMATISATION CONFERENCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, July 23. There were two remits on the order paper of the Acclimatisation' Conference to-day dealing with the deadly pea rifle (1) That the Government be requested to bring in legislation dealing with the indiscriminate use* of pea rifles, and that the use of silencers bo absolutely prohibited ; (2) that the Government be requested to impose a special license of 5s on all persons carrying pea, rifles, cxcept those used under such conditions as may be deemed expedient. The second remit is the same as that passed by last year's conference. There was much discussion on the usual lines made familiar by reports of earlier conferences. The President (Mr'L. 0. 11. Tripp) said the Government would bo disposed to look more favourably on the request for legislation since the telegraph and telephone insulators had become cuch a popular target of the ,]»vrifle boy. The first remit was withdrawn, and an addition made to the second defining pea rifles as " rifles of 25 calibre and under." In this form the remit was adopted.
