FUTURE OF NICARAGUA
PROPOSED AMERICAN PROTECTION.
Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright,
WASHINGTON, July 22.
President Wilson's project to institute a protection and supervision over Nicaragua ig favourably received in the Senate, and the Foreign Relations Committee is supporting the policy. The nature of the control proposed to be exercisable by the United States does not bind the latteT country to any obligation to pay Nicaragua's debts. It is likely, however, that the increased commercial stability resulting from American control will soon place Nicaragua on a sounder financial basis. It is understood that the Republicans in the Senate are not likely to offer any opposition, therefore the scheme is likely to pass.
Considerable feeling will probably be engendered amongst the South American Republios, which jealously regard the expansion of the United States' powers.
