FIRES

MARION, July 21. Tho Ascot boarding-house at Hunterville, owned by Mr Weston and occupied by Mr R. Parker, was totally destroyed by firo at 1.30 this morning. The insurance on tho building is not available. Mr Parker had £200 on the furniture, but is a heavy loser. 1 WELLINGTON, July 21. Early this morning an eight-roomed shop and dwelling at Island Bay were destroyed by fire. The occupier, Mr W. 0. Wilkinson, . and his wife wero sleeping upstairs, and tho first intimation Wilkinson had was tho flames licking his face. He threw his wife out of the window, and then himself jumped. He was taken to a doctor with bums on his face and feet. He also strained his back, but his injuries are not serious.- The building was ownod by Odlin and Co., and was insured for £700 and tho stable for £40 in Hie Alliance office. Tho contents were insured for £700 with the London and Lancashire office, and for £437 with the Guardian office. INVERCARGILL, July 21. A fire occurred to-ni'sht in the Southland Engineering Company's premises in Dee street, but the damage was confined to a wooden partition and the roof of the building, boing comparatively light.

About 2.30 yesterday morning a fire completely fjuttcd a . wheelwright and coaehbuilder's shop and an attached cowbyre situated at the corner of Green street, North-East Valley. The flames were first seen by a neighbour, who gave the alarm, but it was then too late to save anything. A cow which was in the byre was destroyed, as well as throe vehicles which wore nearing completion. No cause can bo assigned for the outbreak, which it is thought started in the byre. The place was owned by Mr J. G. Hall, and carried no insurance.
