KAITANGATA NOTES.

(Fbou Odb Own CoHfiBsrosDENT.I KAITANGATA, July 21. A very successful concert and dance in aid of the local band took place in Wilson's Hall on .Friday last. The funds of the band will benefit to the extent of, approximately, £17. The following contributed to the evening's, enjoyment:—Messrs F. Edwards. H. Smith, W. Ramage, V Bennettse, and Misses H. Martin and F. Pacey (songs); Miss J. T. Smaill and Mr A. Frazer (piano dnet); Miss L. M'Laren (piano solo); Miss M. Burke (violin solos); Mr C. Abbott (character comedy). Miss M'Laren acted as accompanist. Selections were also given by the band. A meeting in favour of the "Bible-in-schools" question was held in the Presbyterian Hall on Wednesday evening, but was sparsely attended. Several ministers from Balclutha and elsewhere attended and spoke in favour of this system; but otherwise nothing else was done. The local Orange Lodge celebrated its 12Ui July anniversary yesterday by marching through town to • the Wyre street Chapel, where an address appropriate to the occasion was preached by the evangelist, Rev. Mr Noble, to about 60 brethren. Besides these there- were present 11 ladies from the local ladies' lodge, and a large number of the public. The local band played the brethren to and from the churcli. There is at present an epedemie of influenza, and whooping cou"h in the town, due to a great extent to Die unseasonable weather experienced. Farmers are waiting patiently for suitable weather to allow them an opportunity to have their land ploughed and cultivated for next season's crops. Somo have already made a start, but on the majority of cases (more particularly in Inch C'lutha. where the land is very' sodden) it is not passible to do anything at present.
