COMMITTEE OE IMPERIAL DEFENCE.
LETTER FROM THE HON. J. ALLEN. (Per, United Press Association.l . christchusch; jui y 18. The following letter was read at the meeting of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council from the Hon. J. Allen:— "I am in receipt of your letter of June 25, forwarding a copy of the resolution passed at a meeting held on the 19th instant. . I ,do not agree with your council that there is any danger in a New Zealand Minister accepting an invitation to sit on the Committee of Imperial Defence, nor do I think that there would be any menace to the democracy in so dohig. I think it would be an assistance to the democracy for the Minister to be there. The Committee of Imperial Defence is only an advisory body, and has no executive functions. I liave also to inform you that I, as the Minister representing New Zealand, committed the country to nothing whatever, neither to a financial burden nor to anything else. All I have done is to bring back certain suggestions to the Cabinet. If the Cabinet agrees they will be submitted to Parliament, and I trust Parliament will agree with the suggestions." The letter was received.
