WAIKOUAITI NOTES

(Feou Ode Own Cobbespondsnt.)

WAIKOUAITI, July 18. The Waikouaiti Prcsbytonan Church jubtloo will tab place in August, and in order to mark the event in a fitting manner it is proposed to build a new dhurcli and mako use of tho present wooden building as a Sunday school and social Ml. A successful canvass for contributions towards the building fund has just been completed, and it is reported that the various amounts promised, together with a,Synod grant and a sum of £120 already in liand, exceed £900. It is estimated that a building of brick or reinforced concrete sufficient for tho requirements of tho congregation can bo erected for £1000.

Although a groat deal has been accomplished, in recent years by tho local Domain Board in tho way of reclaiming and beautifying the Domain, the low-lying portions ire sti)! subject to periodical flooding 3 during exceptionally heavy tides, particularly if the high tides are accompanied by a southerly gait. With a view of improving matters and shutting out the sea water from the racecourse and recreation grounds the board is at present considering a proposal lo erect floodgates at the bridge ora Mallccb's road. The proposal; if carried out, should protect a considerable area oi . land from damage by sea water, but the liability' of occasional flooding during heavy rains will still remains. Tho board's policy has been to fill in the lower areas as funds permit, but with .the limited income available a comprehensive sohemo of reclamation could not be attempted., A few early lambs have already made their appearance on Mr P. Toomey's farm, "Puke-ora," and as tho weather has been mild of late they arc doing well. Lambing will not bo general in this district until the beginning of September, and will commence come four weeks later on tic higher country.

The present winter, with the exception of a rough spell in May, has been exceptionally mild, and present indications point to an early spring. Farm work is .well advanced, and all classes of stook are doing well.
