CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.
The following arc the principal clauses in tlio reports to bo presented to tho City Council on Wednesday evening:—
The Public Works Committoo recommends that authority be granted to improve the lighting in Helensburgh road by the erection of two electric lamps ■between those now in the street. With reference to level railway crossings, the committee recommends that the resolution patted .by the Te Awamufu Borough Council with reference to t!>e loss, of life, at such crossings bo approved. Tho city engineer has been instructed to record tho matter of laying down (he carriage-way in Great Kingstreet m front of tho Hospital, from Hanover to Frederck streets, in tarred macadam, for sidcration with tho allocations for next year. Tho Water Committee recommends that authority be granted to connect the present end of tho Bay View road main with the end of the proposed new main in Loudon street—a distance of 31 chains—at a cost of £30. ' Tho General Committee has granted authority to provide the ranger -with temporary ass-stance for a period of three months. Tho assistant will be paid at the rate of 9s per day. The Reserves Committee reports that instructions have been given to instal a seven section Ideal boiler alongside the present boiler in the boiler house at the Gardens at a cost of £40, including all' necessary connections. Tho exiting boiler 16 leaking to some extent, and cannot bo repaired at. this time of the year, and as the matter was of some urgency from this and several oSier points of view, it -was deemed advisable to instal the boiler at once.
Tho Electric Power and Lighting Committee recommends that the tender of Messrs Cooke, Howlison, and Co., of two 3£ horse-power Humber motor cycles, with three-speed gears, for tho sum of £62 10s each, bo accepted. Instructions have been given to make the Taieri County Council tho offer of 60 days' optjon for one-fith of tho power developed by the third unit, which will be readv for consumers on or about August 1. Tho offer is'required to be made in terms of tho agreement with the Taieri County Council. The Tramways Committee recommends that tho offer of the present tramway adverting contractors (Messrs Chandler and Co., Auckland) to tako up additional space on the trams for advertising purposes—(l) on outside boards for the sum of £184 per annum, and (2) on additional inside 6paces for the sum of £129 per annum bo accepted. ,It was also recommended that the tender of the National Mortgage and Agency Company for the supply and delivery of 1000 hardwood sleepers (excepting ironbark) at the price of 5s 3Jd per. sleeper, delivery to bo at various points along the Main South road to Glen road, and a number at tho tramways yard, Andersons Bay road, be accepted.
The Gas Committee rpcommends that authority be Granted for the committee to donate an additional £25 to the Dunedin Expansion League. It will be remembered that the committee granted a similar donation to the league last year, reserving to itself the riprht of considering- any further application that may be made at a future date.
