The Bank of England returns show the stock of gold coin ■ and bullion to be £36,660,000; reserve, £27,288,000; proportion of reserve to liabilities, 53.35 per cent. The notes in circulation total £29,391,000; public deposit*, £10,400,000; other deposits, £40,709,000; Government securities, £12,757,000; other securities, £29,122,000.

The bank rate of discount is 4£ per cent. Short loans are discounted at 2f per, cent., and three months' bills as follows : London, 4 per cent.; Paris, 3f per cent.; Berlin, 4£ per cent. Flour.—Large arrivals of Australian patent brands are stored pending am improvement in the market. First-class patent brands on passage are selling a 6 25s 9d c.i.f.

The oats market is quiet. A grade Gartons, new crop, July-August shipment, are offered at 255, but buyers suggest 235. Beans are slow and prices are lower. Peas are neglected. Silver, 27 l-16d per oz. ,;

Copper.—Spot, £63 7s 6d; Qaee months, £63 17s 6d; electrolytic, £65 15s.

Tin.—fcjpot, £182; three months, £182 15s.

Pig iron, 54s lid. The market is dis-.. turbed over the proposed formation of a limited company to handle the Cleveland' output despite a strong protest by the' merchant houses.

Spelter, £20 15s.

The sugar market is active, though weaker. German, 9s; first marks, lis lOid.

The Bradford wool market is dull and featureless. Fifty-sixes, 23d; fifties, 21d.

Butter.—Good butter is steady, but cheap •, sorts aro more difficult to sell. Danish is' unchanged; Siberian, 92s to 100s; AustTa-' liaii, good uKSalted, 106s to 110s; salted, 104 to 106s. Secondaries arc quiet at 96d to 100s.

The cheese market is quieter, but prices are unchanged.
