Mr William Forrester, on his retirement from business, was tho recipient of a handsome Morris chair and escritoire from Messrs Uownio IStewari and Payne, for whom and whose predecessors he has acted as accountant for over 31 years.
Dv T. H. Pettit, of Nelson, will leave Wellington for London as medical officer of tne s.s. Opawa, about May 6. A Press Association message states that) Sir James Carroll, who has been seriously ill in a privato hospital at Wellington, is reported to be making satisfactory progress towards. recovery.
The members of the Haercmaj Club and a few friends mot on Saturday evening to eay boodbyo and to make a presentation to Mr G. Turner, who is leaving for Auckland. ' Mr Kihnartin. in making the presentation, referred to Mr Turner's good qualities as a club mate, and also expressed tile sincere, regret of liio club at tne loss of so valued a member. Mr lurner suitably responded.
Mr John Bows, who (has been for' eight and a-half years connected with the Uamaru branch of the National Mortgage and Agency Co. as auctioneer and stock salesman, is under orders for transfer to Dunedin. Mr Bews enjoys a ■well merited popularity wiili all connected with the stock business in the Oamaru district, and his removal from Oamaru is viewed! with general regret. On Friday night he was presented by farmers and stock dealers with a gold watch for himself, a gold bungle for his wife, and a gold brooch for his daughter. On Saturday afternoon the auctioneers, stock agents, and merchants presented him with a. gold albert and sovereign case. On both occasions regret was expressed at losing so <good a fellow, but those regrets wero accompanied with expressions of pleasure that he was receiving well earned promotion.
The residents of Fairfield met on Friday evening in tho schoolhouse to do honour to Mr Ellison, tho school master, who has been promoted to Stirling. The large schoolroom was filled to overflowing, many having to be content to bo seated in the passage. Mr John Blair presided, and opened the proceedings with a few remarks suitable to the occasion, and later in the evening, in a very appropriate mariner, presented Mr Ellison, on behalf of the residents, bowlers, and school committee, witSi a beautiful gold l albert as a mark of the esteem in which he is held in the • district. Mrs Ellison was remembered by the ladies, being presented with a very handsome silver teapot as a tangible token of the good feeling towards her. The Kev. Mr J. Kilpatrick made t'ne presentation, and concluded his remarks by wishing her every prosperity and happiness in her new home. Master Anderson, on behalf of the scholars, presented Mr Ellison with a dressing case. Mr Ellison, on behalf of himself and his wife, briefly but feelingly replied. During tho ovening a pleasing programme of musical and vocal items was given, tho following contributing:—Pianoforte solo, Mr Hutton; Bongs, Misses J. Loudon, Barnes, Dunwoodie, Mr Maxwell; duet, Misses J. Loudon and Dunwoodie; recitation, Miss J. Mills; oomio solo, Mr J. Miller. Mr Hutton played the accompaniments. Refreshments were handed round, after which danoing was indulged' in, O'DriscoH's Band supplying the music-
