OPENING THE SEASON.

Tho official opening of tho season in connection with tho Otngo Lawn Tennis Association took place <n tho Association's courts ut Anderson's Bay on Saturday afternooji. The courts themselves and the surroundings were in splendid condition, and as tho weather was perfect a most enjoyablo afternoon was spent by both visitors and players. Tho surfaces of tho courts show a marked improvement on their condjtioji last year, and indicate tliat tbo energies of the last committco havo not been in vain.

Mr G. W. Gibson, president of tho association, took ohargc for the afternoon, ono pleasing feature was tho attendanco of teveral ox-presidents, Messrs J. L. Salmond, A. E. Harraway, R. S. Black, and R. Dauchop, all of whom still take a keen interest in tho game There was a fair attendanco of tho public, and tho enthusiaem displayed augurs well for a most successful season. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies of the various clubs, whilo tho attendance of Flint's Orchestra added largely to tho enjoynicn: of those present. The President, Mr G. \V. Gibson, beforo declaring the court open for the ensuing scaron, referred to tho high place held by lawn tennis throughout tho world. Ho aptly described it as tho most cosmopolitan of games. Reference was mado to the high place Now Zealaadors held in tho tennis world, particular reference being mado to tho world's champion, Mr Antony F. Wilding. Mr Gibson expressed his deairo that the standard of play in Otago would improve, and with this object in view tho association had decided to encourago tho (J grade players more than beforo, for it was from their ranks that tho future champions would bo dra\v.\. Tho largo attendance that afternoon would trivo tho executive every encouragement, and augured well for a successful season. Mr Gibson then declared the courts open for the season ; 1912-13, ami intimated that the courts would be occupied for a short time with a match. President v. Vico-I'rcsidcnt, after which they would be open for social enjoyment.

Tho match resulted in a win for Iho President's side by a majority of 13 games. Following arc tho results of tho games, tho names of tho President's side appearing first ■.•^■
