THE WAIHI DRIVERS' DEFENCE FUND
TO THE EDITOE.
Snt,-l noticed in Wednesdays Daily , Times that the Waihi drivers were appealing to the Chamber of Commerce for assistant. While agreeing with flic resolution arrived al by Ihc committee, as representing tho Chamber of Commerce, I do not think Otngo c«n turn a deaf car to the appeal. WcTiavc.always becn'lo the foro in answering tho call ot those in need, and, if ;. we can send hundreds of pounds to feed and clotho the wives and children of strikers in England, surely weean and will - subscribe towards the wants ot the wives and children of our own countrymen who are defending their risrits and the rights of every Britisher. 1 am surprised that this, matter lias not been taken up before, and I have been waiting to sec a subscription list started. In the hope that you will undertake to start one now, I enclose £5, and trust that this small beginning will havo V bij ending. I know thai this matter ouly 0 requires to bo brought before the public, and it will respond with iU usual generosity. —I am, etc., Render unto C.«sar.
f\Vc have received our correspondent's cheque for £5. The causo of the Waihi engine-drivers is ono that should appeal to most sections of the community, for they, havo resisted the attempt to coerce them into maintaining their membership with a union that is affiliated to a body with ideals of which they have no sympathy. It is ,a cause that is based upon a claim to the'exercise of freedom of thought and judgment. We shall" be pleased, therefore, to receive any further contributions that may he forwarded lo us on behalf of this fund.—Ed. O.D.T.]
