Labour in the United States is lining up ivith a rush to defend the men arrested on the charge of dynamiting the Times office-in Los Angeles "(Cal.) .last October, when some of the newspaper cm- , ployea were killed, 6oores injured, and '.property exceeding' £100,000 in value was ' destroyed. The act was supposed to bo the ■culmination of a long, bitter contest between the management of the Times and the forces of union labour The crime created intenso excitement throughout the United States. Los Angelas is the battleground of the fiercest and most stubborn Labour contest now raging in America.. The Times is tile last leading great daily to boldly champion and practise the doctrine of the "open shop." The forces of united Labour have concentrated ■ all their best fighting machinery, backed -by > money contributions from outside ' unions, to reduce this last stronghold. For 30 years this contest has been pressed to pull down the last flag of the "open shop" 'on the 'newspaper map of the United States. The New York Sun was one of tho last trio of newspapers to stand by tho same flag, despite great financial losses, . but tihe management capitulated about four - years ngo._ Since then the fight has waged more furiously around tho Los Angeles ' Times. '
