TCaJm (California) proposed that a heavy tax be imposed mi the dowries of American brides in all cases of rnternaaonal marriage, so that penurious but titled farbnoe-bunteie might eeciirc a pma& imoiety only of the prioe which the bride pays him for hie name, and that ha himself dishonours by putting up for auction to the highest bidder. Henry criticised the vice- , regal state that is assumed in London by Mr Whitalaw Reid, Ambassador, and denounced as undemocratic the habit of appointing only wealthy men to diplomatic posts. He also alluded to the story that Mr Hayes • Hammond (the special American Envoy to the Coronation) had nudged the King at the Foreign Office dinner and said, sarcastically, that at lie nest-Coronation Mr Hammond attends he should be sure to nudge the Queen. Mr Kahn, in replying, defended American Ambassadors against the charge of extravagance. The debate was adjourned.
