EXCURSION STEAMER WRECKED. TWO WOMEN DROWNED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, VANCOUVER, June 30. The steamer Spokane, with 150 excursionists aboard, bound from Seattle to Alaska, struck a rock in Plumpers Bay and was beached. OTTAWA, July 1. • (Received July 2, at 5.5 p.m.) The Spokane was run ashore in a sinking condition. Two women who were panic-stricken leaped overboard and were drowned.
A wireless message called the steamer Admiral Sampson, which rescued the passengers and crew on the Spokane, which will probnbly he a total less.
One of the victims was Mrs Willkms, the wife of a Washington millionaire, who made a fortuna out of African diamond mining. WRECKAGE SIGHTED. SYDNEY, July 2. (Received July 3, at 0.10 a.m.) The barque Claudina, from Callao, reports sighting wreckage consisting of a mast and the spars of a vessel of about 700 turns, in the vicinity of Lord Howe Island. A quantity of floating timber was recently sighted.
