GISBORNE POLICE FORCE.

COMPLAINTS OF INADEQUACY. (Peb Uhitkd Press association.) GISBORNE, June 30. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to-day the understaffing of tho local police force was discussed at length, and camo in for some severe criticism. The chairman pointed out that there was only a sergeant, a detective, a mounted constable, and five footmen to control a large and scattered district, and a population of 13,400, while in the two large main suburbs the police were seldom if ever seen. Tho chairman stated that ho brought the question up on his own initiative. He. had not been approached by the police, but he considered it quite impossible for Sergeant Hutton to administer tho district with such an inadequate force. Strictures were also passed with regard to tho lack of accommodation for constables at the barracks, thereby causing great inconvenience. Tho meeting decided to make urgent representations to Sir James Carroll and the Minister of Justice on the matter.
