FIRES.

The City Fire Brigade was called out at 1.42 p.m. yesterday to an outbreak of fire in a four-roomed house in Hanover street occupied by Mr J. Hawthorn, carpenter, and owned by the trustees in an estate. The blazo started in one of the bedrooms, and is supposed to have been caused by a lighted match. Very, little damage was done, the blaze being suppressed without much difficulty. The house was insured for £150 in the National office. Ellen Hawthorn, who was in the house at the time of the outbreak, had

to be conveyed to the Hospital, not, however, on account of injuries received in the fire.

A big blaze on the Peninsula attracted the attention of a good many people in and about Dunedin shortly after 8 o'clock last night. The outbreak was in a house occupied by John Horsfall, and situated some distance beyond the Anderson's Bay township. Though only a small house it burned fiercely for some time, the flames being observable until a fairly late hour. Mr Horsfall, who is- a carpenter, had been at home all day, and in the evening was mending a puncture in a bicycle tyre where ho. had occasion to go to the house of a neighbour some half-mile away for some material. He went away from the house at 7.30, leaving a fire burning in the grate, and a candle and lamp alight, and when lie returned at 8.15 lie found the house in flames, and was unable to save a single article. The bouse, which consisted of two rooms, a scullery, and a glass conservatory, was owned by Mrs Horsfall, and insured in the United Insurance office for £200 and the furniture for £50.
