PROJECTED AUCKLAND EXHIBITION.

INITIAL STEPS TAKEN. (Pen United Press Association.) AUCKLAND. May 12. Tho first important stage towards holding an international exhibition in Auckland was taken this afternoon, when the Chamber of Commerce practically comitself to the underlining, and authorised a public meeting to be called to discuss the necessary steps. The chamber received a report of the committee appointed to confer on the matter, which stated that the committee had unanimously resolved—" That a first class international exhibition should oe held in Auckland within the next two years."

Tho Chairman (Mr Leo Myers), in moving tho adoption of tho report, reminded members that it was 33 years since the last exhibition was held. For some time past considerable discussion had taken place in business circles in .regard to this matter._ and the nroposal seemed to have met "with- general approval, not Auckland, but elsewhere. One Wellington paper, however, seemed to think that it was the intention of the provisional committee to ask the Government for financial resistance similar to that given to the Olrristchureh Exhibition, for which the Government was mulcted to the extent of some £50,000 or £60,000. He (the president) wished to say that the Auckland Chamber of Commerce did not suggest that the Government should subsidise the exhibition in this way, and that tho chamber would be satisfied with a much smaller amount than that. An exhibition would give an excellent onportunitv for aiding and generally assisting in demonstrating the progress of the Dominion. There was a general expression of opinion at the time the financial aspect of the Christchurch Exhibition wis being considered that an exhibition supported by Government subsidies should be held at reasonable intervals in each of tho largo cities of the Dominion, so he thought the Chamber of Commerce might go to the Government with every reasonable expectation that its request would be granted,—("Hear, hear.") He moved the adoption of the committees report.

Mr Gunson seconded the motion, which was earned without dissent.
