A SAD DEATE

FATAL BURNING ACCIDENT.

Mis Margaret Noble Matheson, wife of Mr Georgo Matheson, a resident of Hampden, was severely burned on Thursday as a. result of her clothes catching fire w"hil6 sho was employed dcing some washing, and succumbed to her injures 'early yesterday

morning. It appears that tho deceased was washing clothes at a watcrhole in a creek about 200 yards from her home, as'no water was ■ obtainable at the houso. Sho was boiling tho clothes in kerosene tins over on open, firo, and whilo attending to thess deoeased'e aprc'n caught firo. Alis Matteon, who was of a very nervous temperament, at, once commonced to run towards tho house. Hor husband saw hex, and tried to make his way to hor, but "was eomewhat incapacitated from tho fact that ho has a wooden leg, and his wife collapsed- beforo ho oould get to her assistance.- Mr Matheson, on reaching his wife, at once pulled off hor burning cloth®, and helped- her into tho ho ties. Three ambulance nurses were at ones summoned, and first aid,, and did' all in their power to relievo Mrs Mathcscji's sufferings till Dr ' Harrison arrived from Palmerston a couplo of tours ktor, tho doctor being unfortunately delayed through -an aooident to his oar. Despito all that could bo done, however, Mrs Matheson, who had received very severe burns on tho body and lower limbs, gradually sank and died, as stated, above, too following morning. The deceased was a sister of Mrs Hastie wifo of Mr A. Hastio, butohcr, Dimet&n, and a sister-in-law of Mr T. H. Matheson, of Oamaru. ' Tho coroner has been informed of tho sad fatality, and so inaoost will bo hold.
