SOCIAL AT WAIAU.
(Per United Phess Association.) OHBISTCHURCH, March 23. The Hop. T. Mackenzie was welco:r.o:l at a, large social gathering at Waiau last night.
He said ho had no sympathy with the cry 'that Ministers were too much in the country and too little in Wellington. .Ministers took their work with Hum, and he was sure they had the suppoit of the people in visiting the country. After a reference to the excellence of the exhibits at the Waiau show, the Minister said the apple industry was going to be one of the most important in the country. When markets were found in tho Motherland and the w;:ste lands here brought into use, the apple-raising industry would become a valuable ;:«sEt. He went en to' review the meat prospects throughout the world, and spoke very hopefully of the prospects of the woof tiacie. What the country required were men and money, and all the spare spaces peopled. Great Britain had a surpkis population and capital, and both Australia and New Zealand should hav-a a much large , proportion of that surplus. The time was coming when the burden of Empire would rest more heavily on the Dominion's shoulders.
