THE SPRING GARDEN.
I Mr D. Tannock, superintendent of City . Reserves, lectured in First Church Hail last evening, under the auspices of tho Dunedin Horticultural Society, on "The Spring Garden." The hall was full, and marry had to bo content with standing . room. Tin© lecturer, who treated tho i subject in a discursive manner, studiously fee from botanical perplexities, was l:s----tened to with olosc attention, and at tho close of an hour's .interesting discourse on | the beauties aird mainagenient of the ! spring flower garden was- accorded a i hearty round of applause. All the hardy spring flowers were passed in review, and I their habits, propagation, and cultivation warp dwelt upon in an, instructive manner. ■ [ The primrose, the polyanthus, auricula, . crceus, violet, pansy, wallflower, tulip, hyacinth, anemone, narcissi, and a host of other attraction that gladden the heart and oharm the eye iir our gardens in the springtime had a now life given to them > as they, were handled by Mr Tannock. This was specially the case in regard to the 'wallflower, which, under intelligent cultivation and by the cutting of the taproot ami encouragement of the fibrous roots, becomes a bushy froe-flowcring plant instead of a leggy, scraggy, weedy growth, with a few blooms to hide its deformity. J Specimen plants were exhibited to illus- ' tnite the best methods of culture, and some valuable hints in regard to securing varieties of primroses and ensuring the , certain flowering o! spring bulbs were . given. A vast amount of information was I i'lso imparted in a brief period upon the I numerous spring plants "referred to, and a , splendid stand of narcissi blooms from the garden of Mr Henton Rhodes, Canturhury, was exhibited to illustrate the perfection to which this popular flower can be grown under intelligent treatment.
