A Sydney message notifies the death from pnoumonia of the Rev. Joseph Beetle, expresident of the Methodist Conference. A London message advises that Mr Noil M'Glashan, a Melbourne merchant, died suddenly at the Glasgow Railway Station. The. Rev. F. W. Holland arrived in Duncdin from Melbourne yesterday. He will fill the pulpit at First Church during, th© month of •September. The Rev. F. Tubman, M.A., B.Sc., at one time curate of St. Matthew's Ohurch, Dunedin, has been appointed by tho Bishop of North Queensland to be rural dean of the Mackay division of tho diocese. An Auckland message states that at a meeting of the Harbour Board yesterday afternoon the resignation, owing to failing health, of Mr J. M. Brigham, who has been secretary and treasurer for 38 years, was received and accepted. Mr Brigham intends visiting England shortly. The North Otago Times reports that Mr George Grcig, of tho Oamaru*railway staff, is being transferred to Clinton as assistant stationmoster in succession to Mr F. Megjrett, who is going to Ranfurly. Mr Grcig has filled the position in Oamaru of officer in charge of tho inwards goods department, Mr R. S. Skinner, lately stationmaster at Pukciiri, and at mesent stationmaster at Ranfurly, will fill Mr Grciff's place.
Some 30 members of the Caledonian Bowling Club met at the Gladstone Hotel last evening to bid' farewell to their clubmate, M T A. G. M'Donald, who is leaving for Goro. Mr C. F. Greenslade presided, and .presented Mr M'Donald with a small token on behalf of the club, quoting his good qualities as a bowler and worker for the club, also regretting the loss of a real lryo member, and wishing him success in his new sphere. Messrs W. M'Lood, J. North, G. Capstick. A. W. Brown, and others spoke of Mr M'Donald's good qualities. Mr M'Donald suitably replied. Ho leaves for Gore to-day. • Captain Alex. Simpson, who was in com. nwnd of tlie Pericles when she was wrecked on March 31 off Capo Loemvin, West Australia, was the recipient of an ' unusual honour .recently in London. It is decidedly unusual for a shipmaster to bo specially honoured for his skill and resourcefulness in transferring his pasfengors and crew to the ship's boats' after the' vessel has sustained serious damage.
