Tho lattcr's twentysccond move was, however, a weak one, Mr Mills lost a bishop thereby, and resigned on the fortieth .move. At board 2,' G. F. Dodds opposed T. Mara. The lattcr's thirteenth move was an error of judgment, Mr Mara himself describing it as " ail imbecile move." Mr Dodds pressed forward a vigorous attack, and compelled his adversary's resignation nin« moves later.

At boards 3, 4, 5, and 6, where Messrs A. Melior, J. Dunlop, A. Ellis, and G. 1). Wright wei;e pitted against Messrs P. Mara, J. Mallouk, H. Gourlay, and W. At board 7, where Archdeaoon Gould [ought G. P. Wood, the latter neglected a chance of securing a bishop on the seventh move. At tho mid-game the archdeacon emerged from a series of exchanges with a numerical- advantage in pawns whioli compelled Mr Wood's resignation en the thirtyninth move.

At board 10, where A. T. -Chodowski op. posed A. Burford, the umpire anisplaced the Timaru player's bishop on square 31 instead of on square 13. Mr Chodowski lesi: a knight through this error, and ultimately the game.

At board 11 T. J. Rossfcotham, nfler his opponent, (A. Beck) had played havoc with his pawns, cleverly evaded a. disastrous defeat by scouring a draw by perpetual cheek. At board 12 W. J. Sma.rt opposed B. Hayes., The latter won a pawn through a manoeuvre not anticipated by Smart. At midnight these players agreed upon a draw, although Hayes had a naivn woll posted at ICR 6.

The scores are:—Dunedin, 4 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses; Timaru, 2 wins, 2 draws, 4 losses. The result of the match now hinges upon the decisions of the Adjudication Board on tho four unfinished games reserved for its judgment
