LAND TAX ASSESSMENT

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S PROPOSALS. UNEASINESS IN LONDON. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 18. (Received August 18, at 10.30 p.m.) An article signed ".Imperialist" in the Morning Post say* there is a certain amount of uneasiness in London financial circles as tho effect of Mr Fisher's land taxes. It is impossible- to bo truthfully reassuring in rega'rd to tho prospects of British companies holding largo properlies, and it is equally clear that the taxes will make-' tlio holding of large areas in an unproductive form absolutely impossible. The taxes are certain to pass without serious alteration, and thero is a remote clianco of their boing declared unconstitutional. They will cause a grave injustice unless the act safeguards the city landlords. The difficulty might bo met by a provision that tho penal rates shall not operate as regards areas under 10 acres. It is unlikely that the financial stability of Australia will be endangered. The aim of the legislation to settle numerous small yeomanry is good, but the method is experimental.
