LONDON, July 28. In the coarse of the debate on the declaration oath Mr Asquith suggested a new formula—iviz., that the King declare himself to be a faithful Protestant, Mr Balfour supported the proposal. SECOND READING CARRIED. . LONDON, July ,28. (Received July 29, at 0.25 a.m.) •In the House of 'Commons Mr Asquith argued that the Protestant succeosion was tunply safeguarded, othorwise lie meant the new formula to meet the wishes of the Anglican and Nonconformist opponents of the original bill. Some Protestant members of tile House of Commons desired a specific repudiation of Roman Catholic doctrines.
Mr Balfour contended that the proposed declaration would suffice. ilr Birrell added that tlw singling out of specific doctrines was offensive. Tho closure was carried by 313 votes to 187. The Hon, Agar Robartes's amendment to reject the bill Was negatived by 410 \otes to 84, and the Dc<Jar;t-tion Bill was then read a, second time.
Mr Redmond urged -Mr Asquith to communicate to members the Commonwealth's address to the King relating to the declaration oath. .
Mr As'tiuitli replied that lie noticed by press telegrams that the House unanimously voted the address, but the text had not yet been received.
