'.Flic monthly meeting of tlw, committee of the Otago -A. aind P.- Society was held yesterday, and was attended by Messrs J. Loudon (president, in th? chair), W. Patrick, W. Shennaii, R. A. S. Cantrell, E. F, Duthie, J. Smith, W. J. Charters, W. Gardiner, J. Gow, T. .Ritchie, F. Freeman, J.. Nimmo, .J, Elliot, 0. 11. Gilroy, G. H. M'Ewan, A. Todd, A. Fleming," 11. M. Driver, A M'Farlane, E. Bowler, and J. R. Scott. Apologies were received from Messrs A. S. Orbsll, J. Hazlett, 'I'. E. Jefooate, D, Murray, J. Angus, A. Johnson, J. Patrick, J. W. Blair. J. Macandrew, W. Souter, D. Andrew-, and W. Laid>!aw.
Tire Secretary of the South, Island Dairy Association of New Zealand wrote with reference to the proposed importation, by the Government of Jersey cattle, and forwarded the following resolution of his association asking th© society to support the same:— "That this association advise the Minister of Agriculture to import the milking strain shorthorn as the breed most desirable for tho South Island, as the association doss not consider the importation of Jerseys advisable for use in Otago and Southland," After careful consideration of the matter and the opinions of various members. had been expressed, 'it was resolved, on the motion of Mr W. Gardiner, seconded by Mr James Smith That the Otago A. and P. Society respectfully protests against the Government- spending a sum of £1500 on tho importation of cattle, particularly Jorseys, and is of opinion that the matter might well be left to -private enterprise." And that a copy of the resolution 1» forwarded to the Minister of Agriculture.
Mr P. Pattullo wrote thanking the committee for the very handsome framed resolution recently sent him, and wished to convey his thanks for the presentation, anil stated that he especially appreciated tlw signatures of to many friends he had Jiad tlia pleasure of working with in the past. Messrs- Nathan and Go. (Ltd.), Wellington, agents for Messrs Keeps Ltd., wrote offering to provide for competition at tho winter show a -silver challenge cup and medal for butter treated with their Diamond brand preservative. It was resolved to reply that the sociel-y was unable to accept tho offer owing to tihe conditions attached to it as the society had a rule in force that 110 cups or medals could bo offertd for competition which restricted exhibitors to the exclusivo use of either preservatives or fertilisers offered for sale by the donors
A letter -was received from Messrs Dawsons (Ltd.), Dunedin, offering a very handsome silver challenge shield, valued at 40, guineas, for the cattle classes at the summer chow. It. was resolved to heartily thank the firm for its very generous donation, which should have tb» effect of considerably increasing the entries. A subcommittee,' consisting of Messrs Gow, Char-
ters, M'Farlane, and Duthio, was' appointed to go into tho question of conditions, ami also She classes under which the shield should be competed for.
Mr B. Scth-Smith, Onmaru, wrote giving some useful particulars in connection with fat stock shows in England, and offering some suggestions with regard' to the weighing of fat stook at, the winter show. It was resolved to thank Mr Smith for his intersting and instructive letter, whicli was referred to the winter slmw Fat Stock Committee for consideration.
The recommendation of tli? Draught Horse Committee that the draught breeding section of horses be jndged.on the first day of the show, and that the necessary accommodation to make provision for this ba'created at Tiihnna Park, was, after discussion, finally agreed to, the committee realising tliat in order tc provide more entertainment and to give extra time for the work of (lis second day of the show . it would be necessary to have more judging done on the first day.
