NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE
ONE MONTH'S' CONDEMNATIONS.
(Fboh Oub Own Oobhespqkdeht.) LONDON, June 15. T-ho recent condemnation of some New Zealand pork as unfit- for human-, food made mo curious tc ascertain the amount of this sort of thing that is usually detected. Practically every day Of the month, it seems, something or other emerging from thp holds of tho big liners lying in the docks is condemned by the vigiknt officers of tho Port of London authority. Taking only the docks. w'hcrc th.o vessels .from Australia and New Zealand lie, I find that during one month, ending with the end of May, there were 59 condemnations of foodstuffs landed from vessels from all parte of tJie. world. Of these 16 tt-ei-e out of New Zealand holds, 21 out of Australian, and only' three of Argentine meat. This discrepancy need not cause any alarm. Most of flis Argentine .roept has been ,in the refrigerated chambers only half the time that t u e Antipodean meat -has spent there, and it is only natural that tliTe should-be a smaller percentage of condemnations. A great deal of Argentine produce, also, goes to tho West of England ports. Tlii list of New Zealand condemnations, which miy be of some interest, is as follows:—
Ex Karamca: 3 pieces' bejf, 40 boxes sweetbreads. 1 pieco luaf. Ex Paparra: 11 cases' pig- kidneys. Ex Unapoliu: 10 pi R ; carcases, 251b chc?c, 4711) cfeefi* Ex Wniwsira: 2 butt-ccks fca;f. Ex Arawa: 2 carcases and 5 pieces lamb. Ex Star of New Zealand j 44 caroasre ... ar<l 5 pieces mutton, 1 piece beef . 10 pieees I>"M. ' Ex Rimutaka: 2 pig carca-sis. Ex Mafsra: 1 carcase mutton. Ex Tomoana: 3 pieces mutton (ship's ftcres). Ex .Rinuitaka: 4 pig carcases. It would be misleading to make any Serious deductions from thesa figures. For purposes cf comparison it would be nee*. E j"'y to have comprehensive figures- for all Of r!wt ls n a! i d - a "rrl he foodstuffs of Great Britain. The important fact lias ten t—ttcd to the Dominion that some cf the pig I carcases which wer-
condemned bore tin Government certificate, but had not been subj-jcfAj |o the full process of inspection required before such a label is attached.
