(Received Feb. 13, at 5 p.m.) Dr Jameson denounced Mr Merriman's resuscitation, of racialism, and declared: "We want a .best-man Government, independent of ■■ party or race. Pending tho repudiation of ' Mcrrfmania' by Mr liotha or the responsible leadens, the Progressives must buckle on their armour." Dr Jameson was unable to believe that Mr Botha would head the. Government planned by Mx Mcrriman. MR SMUTS-AS PEACEMAKER.. 'CAPETOWN, February 11. In the course of a speech at Middelburg Mr Smuts (Colonial Secretary for the Transvaal) said he believed that Air Merriman's (the Cape Premier)-Worcester speech had been greatly misunderstood. Mr Merriman was an outspoken old warrior who fired' a shot -which discqncertedithe whole o!..South Africa, but the situation he created would pass over. South Africans must get rid 'of their provincial • feeling, and - eeek. the welfare-of the whole.
