INQUESTS.

WAIROA, December 7. The evidence at the inquest in regard to the drowning of the child Sill; showed that it had been playing. The mother jumped into the flooded river and rescued the body a quarter of a mile from the scene of the accident. The parents are half-castes, and in their grief forgot to report to the police. A verdict of " Accidental death" was renamed, with u rider drawing attention to the-laxity of the Natives in reporting sudden deaths.
WELLINGTON, December 7.
At the inquest on Edwin Cox, an oldage pensioner, who was killed by a train at Petone, the evidence showed that deceased had amplo warning, but-apparently changed his mind about going over the crossing, and practically walked right into the engine, A verdict of "Accidental deajth, and that tj'ie oflicals were not to blame " was returned.
HOKITIKA, December 8. An inquest was held to-day touching the death of a man named Herbert Jolly, a Tasmanian, who succumbed to injuries sustained tlirough a pipe stem entering his right eye to the depth of 2-J inches and not being extracted until 12 hours afterwards. The evidence went to show that the accident happened during n scuffle, and the remarkable thing about the affair was that the deceased was unaware that 'the portion of the pipe had entered his eye until it was extracted by 'a doctor. The jury returned a verdict that death resulted from an abscess on the brain, causcd : by a pipe stem. There was not, sufficient cvidoace to prove how the accident accurred.
