MAGNETIC SURVEYS.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 8. Letters received in Christchurch state that the Carnegie Institutions magnetic survey yacht Carnegie recently left Newfoundland for Falmouth, England, to institute comparisons between the records taken by those on board and those taken at the Magnetic Observatory at Falmouth. The Carnegie has yet to complete the magnetic survey of the Atlantic Ocean, and it is not expected in the Pacific until tho magnetic survey of the Indian Ocean is in hand.

Mr D. Mawson, a member of Sir Ernest Shack-leton'e Antarctic Expedition, states in a letter to a friend in this city that he intends leaving Adelaide on the 12th inst. for London in order to discuss the magnetic survey work of the expedition with the scientific members of the party. Mr Mawson's work has been somewhat hampered owing to one of the boxes containing the results of magnetic observations having been carried on by the Nimrod to London, instead of being landed at Lyt-telton. The two volumes, in which are set out the results of the scientific expedition which visited the sub-Antarctic islands towards the end of 1907 are approaching completion, and it is anticipated that they will be ready for issue before the end of the present yca'r. The volumes will be quartos, will each contain over 400 pages, and will be profusely illustrated. A valuable appendix will contain a bibliography of the literature of the sub-. Antarctic islands. At present- Dr Chilton is busily engaged revising the final proofs of the book.
