UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

3'ho regular meeting of the University Council, held yesterday afternoon, was attended by Professor Sliand (in the chair), Dr Church, I he Rev. A. Cameron, Professor Ilewitson, and Mr L. Harris.

Tho I'inanco Committee reported thai, requisitions for apiwratus, materials, and books liud lieen passed to the amount, of £328, £ 141 of which was chargeable to the ISoverly trust. The committee had agreed to recommend Dr Malcolm's request: for an ox&tVi»;ture of £50 in the purchase of apparatus, models, etc. The bank pass hook showed .'I credit balance of £825 on November 23, against which there were outstanding cheques amounting to £171. Tho coin.mttce recommended, in connection with tho Beverly trust, Unit £668, now on fixed deposit, be retained in the meantime a.s a reserve, and that £222 bo appropriated towards the cost of providing electric lightmg and power for the physical laboratory tind other departments entitled to benefit luidcr Mr Beverly's will. The income for tho year ending September 1, 1909, was £1144, and the exjKindituie £422. The Minister had made a statement which he (Mr Allen) had asked him to put in writing. It was to tho cll'oct tliufc tlie council could go on with the buildings, letting £3000 worth of the work, and that in all probithilty the other £1000 woulJ come from endowment land revenue if the Government proposals were carried. The matter of site required to be settled. On the subject of the appointment of a bacteriological and public health lecturer, Mr Allen had written to tho Hon. Mr Fowlds that the council regretted it was not in it position to offer more than £250 a year; further, that Mic (Mr Allen) ha'd lieen requested to endeavour to jiersuado tho Government to give at least £300 in order that the services of a good man might be sccured for the new position. lie trusted that the Minister would see his way to provide the £300, making the salary to start with £550. 110 felt sure that the council, as soon as it was able, would supply another £50. which would make the salary £600. 110 thought a really good imin could not be secured for less flwn £550, with a prospect of £600. He further called the attention of the Minister to the fact that the council desired that lie would at once take slops to call for applications at. Home and elsewhere so that tlio new lecturer would take up his work in 'April next.—lt was decided that Professor Shand, Dr Church, Mr Harris, and Professor Scott (if he had returned to loivu) should negotiate with (he Harbour Board for a site on the reclaimed land near the Pelielief Bay Railway Station.

Mr F. R. Shepherd wrote that the improicinents in the electric installation na<l been carried out at a cos.t of £15—Approved.

Mr J. C. Adams, deputy chairman of the Canlcrbliry College, forwarded a report of n sub-commitree on the standard ot matriculation. The report was to be sent to the fk'iia'.o for consideration. Tho writer sugf/esi!ed that the Otago University urgKj favourable consideration of the report upon the Senate.—Referred to the Professorial Board for report.

The Professorial Board recommended that a safe be procured, also that a Union Jack be purchased for hoisting on patriotic occasions.—Mr Harris was authorised to procure a safe, and the question of a flag was left to the House Committee.

Professor Black wrote asking for a bonus of. £10 for his laboiatory assistant, Mr Henry Parkinson.—Agreed to. Dr Church gavo notico that ho would move lit. next meeting—" That tho council appoint honorary lectt.rcrs on diseases ot children, diseases of the skin, and urinary diseases."

It was decided lo hold a spccinl meeting on the 14th inst. to meet Mr John Sttidholme in reference to the Chair of Domestic Science.
