HUDSON RIVER TUNNELS

(Received July 20, at 11.30 p.m.) New York and New Jersey were united yesterday by means of a tunnel fcr electric trains, constructed at a cost ot £14,000,003. 0.11 February 25, 1803, the first, pair of tunnels under tho Hudson lt-ivor were formally opened for public service. The tunnelling of the river had been previously wUiwloi'.ed twice owing to capital and engineering difficulties. The work was completed by an Kuijlishmaii, Mr Charles M, Jacob, thief engineer of the Hudson and Manila,!;an railroad, and was part of tho Gcheiiie which has just been comploteel, and which will give to New York ami New Jersey a.n cntiroJy now underground system. Tho scheme cmbracos IS miles of line under river and under ground, composed of the above-named trv.iii tunnels, which run from Iloboken to the central part of Manhattan, another pair of river lubes extending from the Pennsylvania tcriiKnv.s in Jeisey city to'Ccsthndi, street, Manhattan, a transverse tunnel running parallel with the river Lank on tho Jers.4 fide, whicii connects the Eackawanna, Erie, and the company's two terminals there, a branch line from Jersey city to Newark, and, 011 the Manhattan side, a short ipur joining t.lio system with tlio pveseit subway. When the Fonwylvanis Railroad Company',) main line tubes are completed there wiil !;e six tunnels under the Hudson River.
