(Received July 20, at 11.30 p.m.) New York and New Jersey were united yesterday by means of a tunnel fcr electric trains, constructed at a cost ot £14,000,003. 0.11 February 25, 1803, the first, pair of tunnels under tho Hudson lt-ivor were formally opened for public service. The tunnelling of the river had been previously wUiwloi'.ed twice owing to capital and engineering difficulties. The work was completed by an Kuijlishmaii, Mr Charles M, Jacob, thief engineer of the Hudson and Manila,!;an railroad, and was part of tho Gcheiiie which has just been comploteel, and which will give to New York ami New Jersey a.n cntiroJy now underground system.
