Macdonald jawed awnv suddenly at his house this morning. He had beeu in foiling health for some .six months past, and had for that period practically retired from his nrofession, but his condition of late did not induce the apprehension ,tlmt his end wn.s so near. On Sunday evening Mr MacdonaM, with several members of his family, walked around his garden, and his spirits seemed to betoken a return to his former health. This morning, however, when' preparing to go to his ofl'ict; lie suffered heart failure, and expired in a few minutes. Mr Macdonald was born in Samoa, and at the age of five years was taken to London to be educated. After remaining there some nine years lie came to Auckland, where he was art.iclcd to Sir Irederiel; Whiltake'r, and was admitted ■is barrister and solicitrn when 21 years of age. He was married in 1862 in Auckland, and canic to Invercargill in that year, when lie was appointed solicitor to the Provincial Ooveniment, a position he occupied liiitil the abolition of the provinces. Ho 'was then appointed Crown Solicitor, and occupied that oHiee at the time of his death.
Mr Macdnnnld tool; a keen interest in matters educational, aud was for 16 years consecutively chairman of the Southland Education Board. He also rendered valuable service as an elder of Firrt Presbyterian Church, and in all church work exhibited great enthusiasm. He also for some time conducted the. Sunday afternoon Bible claw, which afterwards became amalgamated with the Y.M.G.A.. But it was as Crown Solicitor that Mr Macdona Id was best- known. He was an able advocate and keen- cross-examiner, and was at all times scrupulously fair to those who ■ canto before him charged with offences against law and older. Mr Macdonald only a month or so back visited Hanmer for tlie benefit of his health, and contemplated a trip to the Old Country, intending to leave the Dominion in about a fortnight's time. Associated with hint in business were Messrs H. A. and A. M, Macdonaltl, who joined liiln on the retirement of -Air Russell a number of ago. Mr Macdouald, who had been twice married, leaves a widow and grown-up family, including Mr H. A. Macdoiiakl, Mr A. M. Mocdonald, Mr T. Macdonakl (commission agent), and Mrs \Y. Quinn, of Invercargill. -
