PLEA FOR CLOSER SETTLEMENT.
(Per United Press Association.)
CITRISTCHURCir, February 24. Tho Workers' Political Association deputed its president (Mr W. J. Rallingcr) to send tho following telegram to 'tho Prime Minister:—"Tho Workers' Political Association trusts that in the public interest you wilt make, further inquiry ■before tho reletting of tho Canterbury Tims, and eo lock them up against closer scf-tloment for 21 years." To which tho Prime Minister lias replied: "Re Canterbury runs, i am afraid there is some misapprehension on the part of the workers, as tho great majority of the runs which may bo offered for closer settlement do not fall in until the year after next— flat is, until 1911, when' every effort will bo niado to see tliat lands At all fitted for closer attlemeut are subdivided for that, purpose. Regarding the lands which ;u'e to bo auctioned at (lie end of this month, full inquiries have been made, and it lias Jweit clearly shown that, none, of them is iilUxl for eltiscv settlement. Any fertile areas within the rims were disposed of years ago by the Provincial Government, and at present arc held by freeholders, and tho Government cannot interfere. You may rest assured that all lands fitted nt all for closer settlement will not bo let for pastoral rims.—J. (.{. Wabd."
