FOUNDATION STONE LAID.
(Pep. United Biess Association.) AUCKLAND, February 24. Tho ceremony (if- laying the foundation (■tone- of tho Auckland Town Hall was performed IJiis aftoruoon by tho Mayor (Mr A. M, Myers), in the presence of a large gathering. No official invitations had been issued, except to ex-Mayors, and the first of these to arrive was the " Fatbcr of Aii'jdund," (ft John Logan Campbell, ■who was -received with cheers. Other exMayors present, wero Messrs A. Kidd, J. -iiiipton, and F. L. Prime. The con! tract for the erection of tho building was ■let. to Messrs Ferguson and Malcolm, of •Auckland, for £87,565 19s in August last. Including furnishing and other expenses, the- total cost of the land and buildings -will be £115,150, of which £5150 was provided in 1883 out of loan; £80,000 was authorised to bo iitised by way of loan in 1906, (ind tho balance of £30.000 wa.s authorised by way of loan last year. Mr Henry Brett {an ex-Mayor of tho city) lias offered to equip tho Town Hall with a suitable organ, which will cost not less than £5000.
